Beginner’s Luck: 7 Ways the Beginner’s Mind Makes Better Art (A Series for Artists)

Every time we create something and share it, we’re the new kid.

We don’t know if we’ll be accepted or liked. We don’t know if our thing will go right or wrong or if what we’re offering will work.

We’re afraid of being rejected by others and maybe most of all by ourselves.

We’re the underdog, the novice, the dark horse.  We’ve got more spirit than credentials.

But we’re also too prickly to stay put, we’re too eager to wait to be told it’s time and we’re allowed and we’re the one.

Somehow – despite not understanding all the rules and not knowing exactly the lay of the land or all the implications of what we’ve begun – we’re doing it.  We’re bringing it and making it happen.

And somewhere inside our wandering hearts we know we’re the lucky ones.  The ones who hold the secret. The ones who spin the magic and bend the light.

Dark Side of the Wound: When the Hurt Makes It Beautiful

FullSizeRender (4)

My eyes are shoved shut so tight I can physically feel the skin pulling taught behind my ears.

The first pristine pricks of the threat of a shattering cry are stabbing at the backs of my thin pulsing eyelids.

Fuck.

Even against the massive concrete resistance I’ve barricaded up, or maybe because of it, scorching tears pierce through and streak inky, crooked, blackened tracks across my cheeks.

Every drop of pent-up anger, shame, loss, greed, regret, jealousy and confusion plunges out of me onto the hardwood floor beneath my naked knees.

Ferocious Peace: The Struggle and Strength to Go Still

Fiery flames dance atop the candles glowing all around me, I know because I lit them seconds ago, but I don’t see them. I’m alone with myself, attempting to navigate the rumbling, velvety darkness behind my pursed eyelids.

It’s the early part of the morning, the slim sliver of time-expanding space where all is perfectly, poetically quiet. Loud quiet.

The stars are still strung up, though their piercing becomes dimmer by the minute, and the energy of the day is still wet and fresh as dew; just beginning to stir like the first warm flicker of the tightly tucked wings on the birds who will soon begin their singing.

I am sitting up straight on the floor, stark still, breathing so slowly it feels just shy of impossible, and if you could see me you would swear I was now adrift inside the most pleasurable, comforting peace within my silken gentle body.

(Podcast transcript is below)

Hello hello gorgeous people, beautiful souls! Thank you so much for being here and for bringing your amazing energy to this space. I am Allison, your host for the podcasts and the creator of Glory Begin.

First let me say thank you all for your messages and love following the opening podcast last week. I can’t tell you enough how much it means to me that you are out there and that we have connected. It is such a gift and I don’t take that for granted. There is a LOT of noise out there and so many messages coming at us from every which way so to be able to spend time interacting mindfully and peacefully here absolutely rocks my soul.

So I thank you for being here and I also want to say that I believe we are here for a reason. If you have come upon this message and something resonates with you, that is not an accident. In fact, I will even go so far as to say that there are no accidents in this life. Every single thing you experience is for a reason.

Glory Begin Podcast 1: The Power Of A New Beginning

gb

Beginning something that matters deeply to our souls takes serious courage.  Change is hard for most of us even when the change we intend to make is one that will improve our health in mind, body, and spirit.

Ironically, it’s when we set out to do something that we know is good for us that we most fear beginning it.  Staying stuck in the same old patterns, though painful, is easy. Disrupting those old patterns can bring us face to face with some harsh resistance – both from inside of ourselves and from the outside world.

It’s in that space – that tricky space made up of the moments where self doubt, fear, and loneliness threaten to derail your quest for joy and a better life – that I most want to serve you.
